1. Welcome and updates by Abigail Panter, Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education
Abigail Panter welcomed the Boards to the final meeting of the term and started the meeting with a few updates.
- The Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) is wrapping up the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS) reports.
- OUE is putting together some measures to assess the existing curriculum; this process will be undertaken during the 2016-2017 academic year.
- The catalog management system contract was signed; UNC-Chapel Hill will implement the new online Undergraduate Bulletin (CourseLeaf) effective with the 2016-2017 academic year.
2. Study Abroad Advisory Report, Robert Miles, Associate Dean for Study Abroad and International Exchanges
Nine study abroad proposals were presented to the Boards. Two of these programs combine a popular science course with a language course, and others place an emphasis on math and science research, focusing on majors that are not normally associated with the study abroad experience. Additionally, the program sought out locations in which there are few other opportunities for students to study abroad.
- UNC Psychology/Spanish in Costa Rica
- UNC Biology/Spanish is Costa Rica
- UNC at King’s College London Summer Program
- Student Exchange Program with Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, Korea
- Academic Programs International (API) Semester Program in Krakow, Poland
- Academic Programs International (API) Semester Program in Dubrovnik, Croatia
- Summer Jazz Program in Florence, Italy
- Münster, Germany, Summer Abroad Program

Robert Miles then responded to Boards members’ questions. All nine proposals were approved.
3. Undergraduate Curriculum Proposals, Jaye Cable, Chair of the Department of Environmental Science
- The Boards approved the request to create a Dual B.S.-M.S.I.S Degree Program in Environmental Sciences and Information Science. The Curriculum for the Environment and Ecology had previous success with the BA degree, and now would like to implement a similar program with the BS degree.
- The Boards approved the request to create a Minor in Middle Eastern Languages. This minor would encourage linguistic training to help students prepare for graduate studies and careers related to the Middle East.
- The Boards approved the request to create a Minor in Persian. The Department of Asian Studies is searching for new instructor to teach these courses and anticipates a hire effective for the fall 2016 term.
