of the General College and the College of Arts and Sciences
Tuesday, January 24, 2012
The meeting was called to order at 3:30 p.m. and chaired by Senior Associate Dean Bobbi Owen.

1. Study Abroad. Four study abroad proposals were presented, discussed, and approved by the Administrative Boards:
- Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, Israel
- CET Film Production in Prague
- Trinity College, Dublin
- Burch Field Research Science Seminar in London
Bob Miles assured members that Study Abroad constantly monitors State Department travel warnings relating to the security of all Carolina students abroad, including foreign-nationals.
2. Revision of the BA major in women’s and gender studies. The Boards approved adding a third three-credit option to the “Theory and Practice of Women’s and Gender Studies” category of the major, effective fall 2012—an additional course drawn from the “Interdisciplinary Perspectives” category.
3. New honors minor in medicine, literature, and culture. The Boards discussed and approved the new minor on this topic, effective fall 2012, and they will be informed when a department is selected to serve as its academic home. The successful “Medicine and Culture” cluster in the Cluster Program is the minor’s precursor. (Subsequent to the meeting, the Department of English and Comparative Literature agreed to house the honors interdisciplinary minor in medicine, literature, and culture.)
4. The revision of the minor in global cinema was approved by the Boards, effective fall 2012.
5. Independent Study Task Force progress. The Boards discussed how to define several types of independent study courses (for example, directed readings and mentored research), in ways that would be meaningful across College disciplines. The Boards will review a complete report later this semester.6. The Boards approved the Curriculum Committee’s report, effective fall 2012.
7. The Boards approved the following curriculum changes, effective fall 2012:
