1. Study Abroad Proposals
The Administrative Boards approved four Study Abroad proposals:

2. School of Education, new minor in education
The proposal to establish a five-course undergraduate minor in education was approved in principle by the Administrative Boards. A more fully developed document will be brought to the Boards sometime next year.

Members asked Associate Dean Erika Lindemann to convey several discussion points to the faculty in the School of Education:

  • The overall structure of five courses seems logical. The proposed minor cites the number of Carolina graduates accepted by Teach for America as the rationale, but there could be a wider audience. Polling Robertson Scholars, many of whom who are minoring in education at Duke, might help better define the population this minor could serve.
  • Managing the research and service learning components might involve significant faculty and staff time.
  • If many new courses need to be developed, the feasibility of the minor might be questionable.
  • First-year seminars should not be used to fulfill requirements for the minor
  • Letters of support from chairs of departments outside the School of Education providing courses for the minor should be collected before these courses are included.

3. BA degree with a major in religious studies: Jewish studies concentration
The Administrative Boards approved a new Jewish studies concentration, effective fall 2012. This is not a new major, but a track in the existing major in religious studies.

4. The Administrative Boards approved the following curriculum changes, effective fall 2011:

  • Department of Economics: the request to require a grade of C or better in ECON 101 (the gateway course) for students majoring in economics and minoring in entrepreneurship.
  • Department of Physics and Astronomy: the request to establish an astrophysics option within the B.S. degree with a major in physics and astronomy. The Boards also approved the request to label the current B.S. major as the “Standard Option.” Neither option will include PSYC 631 or 632 as an alternative for MATH 528 and 529. The revised minor in astronomy was also approved.
  • Department of Public Policy: the request to revise the public policy list of elective and field concentration courses.

5. Curriculum Committee report was approved by the Administrative Boards as written.

6. New Business

  • LFIT for active-duty military and honorably discharged veterans

The Administrative Boards approved the following policy:  that entering students who are either active-duty military or honorably discharged veterans have fulfilled the lifetime fitness General Education requirement by virtue of their active-military fitness training. The approval comes with the endorsement of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science and is effective immediately.

  • ENGL 105 proposal

Dean Owen announced that ENGL 105 was approved by Faculty Council at its April 15 meeting as a three credit hour course. ENGL 105, which will replace ENGL 101 and ENGL 102, will be required for all entering first-year students, except those transferring under the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement, beginning in fall 2012.

  • Members completing service on the Boards

Dean Owen thanked Rich McLaughlin, Abigail Panter, Jackie Hagan, James Rives, and Dorothy Verkerk for serving on the Administrative Board of the College of Arts and Sciences. She thanked Kevin Guskiewicz, Pat Parker, and Barbara Wildemuth for serving on Administrative Board of the General College. These members will complete their tenure on June 30th.

The meeting adjourned at 4:10 p.m.
