2.  Permission to plan a Masters of Arts in Public Policy. The Administrative Boards approved the permission to plan a Masters of Arts in Public Policy, noting that the MA will not presumably be a terminal degree. The degree will serve students unable to complete the PhD.

3.  Proposal for a BA degree with a major in Computer Science. The Administrative Boards approved the proposal with the following stipulations:

    • That MATH 232 be inserted into the list of additional requirements since the course is a prerequisite for MATH 381;
    • That the University standard for earning a grade of C or better in 18 hours of courses be applied to  the major’s core requirement ( the six COMP courses and the three computing or computing-related courses) ;
    • That the “triads” of three computing or computing-related courses will require the approval of the Administrative Boards and should be monitored for course availability.

4.  Renaming of German and Slavic Departments, effective June 1, 2011. The Administrative Boards approved the request to change the name of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures to the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures and to dissolve the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, to be effective June 1, 2011.  The CIP code will be changed for both undergraduate BA degrees.

5.  Miscellaneous Curriculum Changes. The following curriculum changes were approved by the Administrative Boards, effective fall 2011:

Archaeology—move ANTH 416 from the “topics” course list to the “archaeological practice” list as a laboratory course in the major. Remove ANTH 452 from the “topics” list for both the major and minor and add the course to the “general interest electives” for the major (under “electives from related fields”).

Art History—revise the requirements for the BA with a major in art history to read “Of the remaining required courses, at least two courses must be courses at the intermediate level (ART 200-399) and one course at the advanced level (ART 400-699)” to “Of the remaining required courses, at least two must be art history courses at the intermediate level (ART 250-399) and one an art history course at the advanced level (ART 450-699).” Revise the requirement “Three elective courses from ART 200 to 699” to “Three elective art history courses from ART 250 to 699; a first-year seminar taught by an art history faculty member (ART 53, 54, 61, 64, 66, 77, 79, 80, 84, 89 [with approval based on topic]) may be substituted for one art history elective numbered 250 or above.”

Women’s Studies—change the description of the minor in the Undergraduate Bulletin by deleting “The credits must include WMST 101 and come from at least two the divisions of the College of Arts and Sciences” and adding “The credits must include WMST 101 and come from courses chosen from at least two of the following four interdisciplinary perspectives: historical studies, fine arts and humanities, social sciences, and basic and applied sciences.”

6.  Associate Dean’s Report, Associate Dean Erika Lindemann. Dean Lindemann presented the Boards with a list of course changes approved by the Curriculum Committee on January 12, effective fall 2011. The Boards ratified the list. These transactions are appended to this document.

Associate Dean Lindemann informed the Boards that TREQ (Transfer Equivalent) courses have been assigned appropriate General Education designations. This enables TREQ courses to be added to the ConnectCarolina catalog and function properly in Tar Heel Tracker.

7.  Student Appeals Guidelines. The Boards reviewed the draft copy of the Student Appeals Guidelines and agreed “in spirit” with codifying the process.

8. Other Business. Senior Associate Dean Bobbi Owen reported that, to make an earlier change consistent, the title of the B.A. degree with a major in Romance languages and with an emphasis in French would be revised to replace “French”with “French and Francophone Studies.”

9. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 4:10 pm.
